The Norwegian Oil Safety Authority says the Melkøya fire outside Hammerfest on Monday is one of the most serious incidents in Norwegian oil history, according to NRK.

– A fire of this magnitude is serious, says Inger Anda, director of communications and public relations of the Norwegian Oil Safety Authority to the channel.
The fire started in a turbine at Equinor’s production facility on the island on Monday afternoon and was extinguished late at night. The incident is now being investigated.

It is not yet clear how long the plant will be closed. The cause is also unknown.
Equinor was informed on Tuesday that both the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority and the police will investigate and investigate the case.
– We provide the resources we have available to provide the information they need in research and investigation work, says communications consultant Eskil Eriksen.
Equinor will also conduct a separate investigation of the incident.
