The Norwegian Oil Safety Authority says the Melkøya fire outside Hammerfest on Monday is one of the most serious incidents in Norwegian oil history, according to NRK.

The fire started in a turbine at Equinor’s production facility on the island on Monday afternoon and was extinguished late at night. The incident is now being investigated.

It is not yet clear how long the plant will be closed. The cause is also unknown.
Equinor was informed on Tuesday that both the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority and the police will investigate and investigate the case.

Equinor will also conduct a separate investigation of the incident.
