“The suspect has been identified as Ahmad Alissa, 21,” Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said Tuesday at a news conference.

He said Alissa is being treated at the hospital after police shot her on Monday.

– He is charged with ten murders and is in custody, Herold said.

The background to the mass shooting is currently unknown, and police have yet to come up with theories about possible motives.

– Deeply disturbed and paranoid

Police rushed to the scene Monday, and 51-year-old officer Eric Talley was among the first victims. He has later been praised for his efforts, which are described as a heroic act. President Joe Biden has called him a hero.

Alissa is from Arvada, Colorado and has lived most of her life in the United States. His brother told The Daily Beast on Tuesday that he was deeply disturbed and paranoid.

Footage from the scene on Monday showed what was supposed to be Alissa with blood running down her leg, bare torso and handcuffed being transported out of the supermarket. According to court documents, he removed his clothes and was only wearing shorts when he was arrested, writes CNN.

He also did not want to say whether more people were involved in the shooting when he was arrested, but instead asked to speak to his mother, he says in the documents.

– He was bullied

Her brother claims to CNN that Alissa was bullied in high school, where her Muslim name is said to have been ridiculed. The family emigrated from Syria to Colorado, he says.

According to his brother, he became increasingly paranoid around 2014, and at times he must have thought he was being hunted.

– He always thought there was someone behind him and followed him, says and says that he tried to calm him down.

– We said things like ‘Come on. It’s nothing “, but it was closing more and more.

In 2019, he posted several posts on his Facebook profile where he claimed that his school had hacked his phone, writes CNN.

The brother tells the channel that Alissa was neither political nor religious, and assures that he has never seen him threaten or use violence.

– I thought I could never do something like this, kill others. For me it is completely unreal and I am frustrated by the lives it has wasted. I feel sorry for the families, says the brother.

– Played with machine gun object

The 21-year-old used a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle when he committed the mass shooting on Monday. According to court documents, he bought the rifle on March 16, just six days in advance, the AP news agency writes.

He was also wearing a bulletproof or tactical vest, which he left with his rifle and clothing inside the store, the documents say.

The AP writes that after Alissa’s arrest, police searched for members of her family, including her sister-in-law. He is reported to have said he saw him “playing with a weapon that looked like a machine gun” two days earlier.

The brother’s statements that he never saw him threaten or commit violent acts should also not correspond to the reality described in the court documents.

In 2018, he was found guilty of attacking a fellow student in class for allegedly making fun of him a few weeks earlier, by accusing him in a racist manner, writes AP.

The police have released the identities of all the deceased, who were between 20 and 65 years old.

The shooting was another shock for the United States, just four days after a mass shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, in which eight people were killed, including six Asian-American women. It is the seventh mass shooting in the United States this year.

It was particularly shocking in Colorado, where several of America’s most famous mass shootings have occurred, including the 1999 Columbine massacre and the 2012 Aurora movie shoot.
