After 92 years, it is the end of the well-known tobacco business, long run by the “Stutum” actor and the “Fjols til fjells” star.

The residents of Oslo have certainly passed it, where it is located on the corner of Valkyriegata.

Majoren Tobakkforretning has been a known landmark for many years, but Wednesday was the end. That’s when Bjørn Sand and his wife, Unni Bernhoft, cleaned the kiosk after 92 years of operation.

The reactions in the comment field were swift, and several locals think it is a shame that the kiosk is now disappearing:

“Thank you forever for such a good and friendly delivery, be it Lotto, newspaper, ice cream or hot dogs.”

“So sad, so sad! A gem of a classic tobacconist with perfect sausage sales served with feeling and style. Thank you for holding out for so long. What about fine furniture? “

“Sad. On May 17 it was a common tradition in our family to buy sausages and lompe here, before going down Bogstadveien to see the children’s train,” are among the comments of the residents of Majorstuen.

When Nettavisen talks to the Major’s acting general manager, Bjørn Simen Sand (son of Bjørn and Unni), it emerges that the timing of the shutdown is not accidental.

– It is better to be realistic about how the situation is, than to doubt something just because someone thinks it is a milestone and an institution. It’s not good for any party. It was not two months that people did not come, this has gone beyond all industries.

– I am very happy that I do not have to lay off many employees. My parents are retired, so this only affects me, and I’ll probably manage, Simen Sand tells Nettavisen.

He also adds that the family wants to thank all the loyal customers who have been with the small tobacco business for many, many years.

Bjørn Hjalmar Sand, which is his full name, was born on September 19, 1928. He is at once critic, filmmaker and actor, but perhaps best known for his role as “Stutum.”

Stutum, also derived from stut-dum, was created by Bjørn Sand in the mid-1960s and appeared regularly in sketches and articles on television and radio until the early 1990s.

The character was also a regular caller on Totto Osvold’s radio shows from 1972 to 1994. In 1973, the two received the “Spellemann Award” for their characteristics.

Stupid and selfish

The character became very popular and gave rise to the word “stutum”, which according to Wikipedia denotes a “stupid, selfish and petrified person”. Bjørn Sand himself was politically far removed from the views expressed by Stutum.

But Sand began his career on the magazine stage in the 1950s and collaborated with magazine kings Einar Schanke and Alfred Næss.

As an actor, he starred in movies such as 1968’s “The Man Who Couldn’t Laugh” and not least the unfortunate home builder Olav Femte in the 1972 cult classic “Norwegian Building Blocks.” Sand has since said that he was missing. excited about this role., he was actually going to go to Harald Heide-Steen jr.

New recordings

Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft (born March 4, 1933) starred in several films in the 1950s and is especially remembered for her role as flutist / daughter of the hotel owner in the classic “Fjols til fjells.”

A curious point is that both “Norske Byggeklosser” and “Fjols til fjells” were recorded recently, respectively, in 2018 and 2020. Bjørn Sand and Unni Bernhoft have been married since 1955, and the couple have two children, the producer and director. Jon Ola Sand, and actor Simen Sand. When Unni Bernhoft’s father, magazine legend Bias Bernhoft, died in 1986, she took over the Majoren Tobakkforretning operation in Oslo, which had been owned by the family for 90 years.
