The Left Committee wants to significantly increase child benefit, but tax it

– The proposal ensures that low-income families get more than they get today. Those lower in the income scale will be able to get between 7,000 and 8,000 crowns more than today, Sondre Hansmark tells NTB.

He runs Unge Venstre and sits on the party’s program committee, which presents a new parliamentary program on Thursday night.

The proposal, endorsed by a unanimous committee, states:

“The ordinary child benefit (0-18 years) in 2021 can be increased from NOK 12,648 to NOK 19,784 within a neutral income framework”, which means that state spending on child benefit will not increase.

– We will not spend more money, but we will prioritize better than today, says Hansmark.

Unfair to give the same

Hansmark says that he believes that it is not right for all families with children, regardless of income, to receive the same in child benefits.

– If you have many millions of income, today you enjoy child benefit as much as a poor family. Rather, we must give more to those who need it most. I’m also absolutely sure that those at the top of their income don’t need this money as much as everyone else, he says.

The proposal means that the child benefit is added to the income cap and taxed as income. The lower the income, the more you keep the child benefit.

Droplet differentiation

With this, the commission proposes to move away from the previous line of the Liberal Party of wanting to differentiate the benefit for children.

– We see that a differentiation system is quite bureaucratic and we see that it can create a poverty trap because you have no incentive to increase your income if you later get less child benefits, says Hansmark.

– The taxation that we propose will not affect this way. It will not be a point where you lose your child allowance, it will be much more gradual. You’ll never run out of less money with this proposition, because it’s always viewed in the context of your income, he says.
