At the end of November, Bergen’s director of infection control, Karina Koller Løland, resigned after only eight months in the job.
The reason was dissatisfaction with the fact that he was not allowed to be part of the central crisis management in the municipality during the pandemic situation.
He is now joined by two deputy municipal chiefs who have resigned.
One of them states in an SMS to NRK that his dismissal is related to the statements of Koller Løland.
– Yes, it is connected. I was the system that gave up. Community medicine is nice, the dismissal has nothing to do with the issue, he writes.
Thus, a total of twelve people have left the municipal chief medical department in the last two years.
– It is fundamental for the functioning of the municipal chief doctor’s work, Koller Løland tells NRK.
– It is difficult to see that one person can handle the work of six, he continues.
– Our capacity is under pressure now
The department basically consists of a municipal chief physician, a chief infection control physician and four man-years for assistant municipal chief physicians who are employees of the health services agency.
In the last two years, there has been a large replacement of the group’s employees.
According to a summary sent to NRK, ten people have left the department during 2019 and 2020.
On Thursday, it was BA who was able to report for the first time that the last two employees of the municipal chief doctor’s department have resigned, bringing the number to twelve.

Have retirees hired
The municipality has announced the position of chief infection control physician and four municipal deputy chief physician positions, one of which is temporary. The application deadline is already December 15.
Last week, the director of the department, Brita Øygard, temporarily assumed the position of municipal chief physician. He will also take over the duties of the director of infection control, who is currently on sick leave.
The office she leads is starting to dwindle in the ranks, but the two women who have resigned are now working within the two-week and three-month notice period, respectively, NRK reports.
In addition, three retired physicians have been hired for the practice. One of those hired is among the ten who have resigned this year, when he retired on October 1, according to BA.
Brita Øygard did not respond to NRK’s questions Thursday night.
Town Hall: – It is not an optimal situation
There are several reasons why they have left their jobs. But only one of the twelve has resigned due to retirement, says health councilor Beate Husa (KrF).
– We need full capacity, so this is not an optimal situation, Husa writes in an email to NRK.
– Currently, infection rates in Bergen are dropping considerably and the situation is well managed. But we need to recruit quickly.
– Did department employees get too bad working conditions during the corona pandemic?
– The pandemic has been very demanding for the entire organization. The Norwegian Agency for Health Services and the municipal chief doctors have long had a heavy burden.
The city council says that the group’s organization is not optimal and that it awaits a report with recommendations for a new organization from a working group that was created in August.
– I think it will be important in the additional work that the function of the municipal chief doctor is organized differently from the current one. But it has not yet been concluded on how the organization should be, says the councilor.
