GJERDRUM / OSLO (Dagbladet): On Monday, the rescue operation in Gjerdrum continues in full. The emergency services are clear that they still have hopes of finding survivors.

Police have previously emphasized that the ongoing rescue operation is not without risks for the rescue team.

Kenneth Cortsen, leader of the dog search, says the rescue operation is also not risk-free for rescue dogs.

– Dogs are exposed to the consequences that have occurred. There are nails and glass. Sharp objects. They can fall from the heights, he tells Dagbladet.

The seven-year-old rescue dog, Piko, felt it in his body.

– We had an injured dog on Saturday. A dog went through a glass. It gave him a pretty ugly cut on his hind leg. The dog was returned inside. The USAR team, which is also made up of ambulance workers, helped stop the bleeding, clean the wound and put a patch on it.

Drive to the vet

The dog was then taken to a veterinarian in Oslo, who was ready to receive the injured dog.

– That went really well. It is most likely not durable but on the dog, but it is outside the work that is being done now.

Cortsen says that wind conditions are crucial to the distance at which dogs can detect humans.

– If there is good access in the scent image and the wind is straight, the dog can detect people at a fairly good distance. In any case, we work systematically in the landslide zone. We work specifically so that dogs have the opportunity to investigate the relevant areas.

He says the group of dog sitters is highly motivated.

– It is demanding and we work day and night. But we have constant and very good attendance from the Eastern Police District and the apparatus that has been put in place. We have everything we need. It gives tremendous motivation to be able to help family members to get answers.

On the Facebook page of the Oslo Police District, the police posted a post about the patrol dogs on Sunday night.

– This is one of the most significant things we train for, write the police.

The police write that they have acquired good competence in collaboration with the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service.

– The Gjerdrum tragedy has put us to great tests. Strong impressions and emptiness, but it is still a great motivation to contribute so that all those affected get a response. Impressions are difficult to put into words, and the work done in consultation with the Eastern Police Department and several different bodies is well coordinated.

The post claims that several dogs were also injured in the search, but that they will return to work soon.
