– The king has walked a bit and the condition is good, says Bendz, chief physician of the cardiac, pulmonary and vascular clinic of the Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet.
King Harald underwent heart valve surgery in Rikshospitalet on Friday morning. On the same day, it became clear that he would remain in the hospital for the weekend. He is also on sick leave until October.
Operated in 2005
Both Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja visited the king in Rikshospitalet on Friday.
King Harald also underwent surgery on the heart valve between the heart and the main artery in 2005. An artificial heart valve was then inserted. These heart valves have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
Therefore, it is not uncommon for such interventions to have to be repeated after some time, in the case of the king after 15 years. The operation is performed several hundred times a year in Rikshospitalet.

– The king was out of breath, especially two weeks ago. We saw that we had to do more research and then saw that it was time to replace the heart valve, Bendz said Friday.
During the operation, the new valve system was raised through some catheters upstream in the artery, around what is called the main artery and up to the diseased valve and into the heart. The new heart valve was placed where the old one was and the old one was squeezed to one side.
