In the coming days, many people will bake gingerbread and prepare for Christmas dinner. This means that the stove and stove will be used diligently in most Norwegian homes.
But holiday comfort can take a sharp turn if you’re not aware of the potential fire hazards associated with the stove.
– The stove is one of the most practical things we have in our home, especially now at Christmas. At the same time, it is an event that can end catastrophically if care is not taken, says Vestfold Inter-Municipal Fire Brigade information advisor Arnt E. Folvik.
Should melt the butter
In the period from Christmas Eve to the first day of New Years, 471 fire-related insurance claims were reported last year. Displays claims statistics for the industrial organization Finans Norge.
Most people are aware that fats and oils can catch fire quickly, but these are not the only foods to watch out for.
The fire service in Vestfold has responded several times to stove fires that started when someone had to melt some butter.
– Sugar and butter can also catch fire and, in the worst case, cause a fatal fire, says Folvik.
On Friday, they came out with a call on their Facebook page asking people to be careful during Christmas cooking and dinner.
– It’s easy to get distracted by a ringing phone or a crying child. So it’s important not to forget what’s boiling on the stove, says Folvik.
To be aware of
It is usually quite hectic just before Christmas and therefore it is very important to be careful when using the oven and stove.
– A few years ago we had to put out a stove fire that started because a lady put her Christmas presents on the stove and accidentally turned on the heater. Then it caught fire fairly quickly, Folvik says.
He has several tips on what to do to reduce the risk of fire.
– It is very important that you do not use the stove when you are drunk or in a hurry. If you forget to turn off the stove or fall asleep, the fire can spread in no time, Folvik says.
It is also important to keep it neat around the stove so that nothing can catch fire if it starts to burn.
– It doesn’t take much to have a safe and happy Christmas. If you have working smoke detectors and you remember to turn off all the candles and turn off the stove, you’ve done the most important thing, says Folvik.
