«Director of Marte Gerhardsen school in Oslo: from 22 to 6 directors»Wrote VG in March this year.

Education director Gerhardsen then proudly spearheaded the reorganization she was behind. It was to streamline the top of Norway’s largest agency.

– There are a lot of good people, but it is demanding to have a determined and energetic team when there are so many. Therefore, I will go from 22 to six directors at the top. We need to clarify what the standard is for the school, Gerhardsen told VG, who stated the following: “Now she’s cutting sharply in the directors group».

26 million salaries

But today, six months later, the Education Agency has plus directors than before reorganization: A total of 24 directors, with two more on the way.

Soon, 26 directors will serve on the Gerhardsen agency board. The median salary for directors is NOK 1,093,900 per year, according to Dagbladet.

– We went from a senior management group of 22 directors, to a senior management of five division directors and myself, after a painstaking process. In addition, we have leaders trained as school directors, with responsibility for monitoring the schools, and department directors, who support the schools professionally and administratively, Gerhardsen tells Dagbladet.

Two soccer teams

He adds that the reorganization in ours was never a downsizing process.

– After 18 years with the same organization, it is time to do a review to make sure we are the best possible team to further develop the Oslo School. I am fortunate to have trained leaders and professionals on the team, he adds.

– The impression you left this spring was that the agency should only have six directors. What has happened in the meantime that makes you hire more, and now you have 26 directors?

– I have always said that it is the top management that will go from 22 to six directors, because a group of top management the size of two football teams is not very suitable. The difference is that previously all directors were in senior management.

Can understand misunderstandings

Gerhardsen says he understands if someone got the wrong impression of the media cases this spring.

She herself earns just over 1.5 million crowns a year. A little over 200,000 of your salary is a personal supplement.

– I can understand that some people thought that we would be less leaders according to media reports this spring, but the aim of the shakeup was not to reduce us to heads. The goal is to ensure that we support schools in the best way possible in their important mission: that each individual student and learner learns, masters and thrives in the Oslo school. We have high ambitions for all of our students.

– Surprised

Silje Lutro, faction leader in the Committee on Culture and Education in Oslo for the Conservative Party, is in awe of the development at the Education Agency.

– I am a little surprised that the number of directors of the Education Agency is much higher than those presented a few months ago. With this reorganization, it appears that there will be an even longer path from individual school to agency management. However, we in the Conservative Party are not very concerned with counting the number of directors, but with what they work. We are concerned about all the feedback we receive from Oslo schools that experience that they have received poorer follow-up from the agency recently, Lutro says.

– Schools are concerned that there is less attention to the professional development of students. Then there will be major social differences. Unfortunately, we already see that the arrows are pointing in the wrong direction and that several of the Oslo students are falling behind in reading and arithmetic, he adds.
