8,881 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Sweden in the last 24 hours. Tegnell warns that the death toll will continue to rise in the coming weeks, but will not respond to criticism from King Carl Gustaf.

Of the 270,000 Swedes who tested for COVID-19 last week, 17 percent tested positive, Swedish state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told a news conference Thursday afternoon.

According to Tegnell, all people testing have positive symptoms or have had symptoms recently.

In the last 24 hours, 8,881 new cases of infection have been registered, a new daily record according to the Reuters media house. In addition, 91 new crown-related deaths have been recorded in the neighboring country.

“Unfortunately, the death toll will increase in the next week or weeks,” says Tegnell.

535 of the 689 intensive care units in the country have already been filled; half of the patients with covid.

– I have no idea what the king says

In an interview with the Swedish SVT, King Carl Gustaf came up with a crushing verdict on the handling of the country’s crown.

– I look at him like we failed. We have a lot of people who have died and that is cruel. This is something we all struggle with, said the Swedish king on the annual show “The Year with the Royal Family.”

Tegnell says he “does not have the opportunity to comment” on the king’s statements, following questions from a journalist.

– Is the King right that we have failed? Ask Expressen reporter Niklas Svensson.

– I have no idea what the king says. I speak on behalf of myself and FHM, Tegnell responds.

A Financial Times journalist asked questions about the recent report that claims Sweden failed to protect the elderly during the corona pandemic. “You don’t feel responsible for not being able to stop it and there is a danger that you will make the same mistakes in the second wave as in the first,” was the question.

– We do our best to keep the spread of infection as low as possible. There is no clear link between the measures and proliferation; some countries have strict measures with high proliferation, so it is complicated. We do the best we can under the circumstances in which we find ourselves to limit the spread, responds state epidemiology.

Covid Warning for Pregnant Women

The Public Health Authority, which has national responsibility for infection control, encourages pregnant women to be very careful to follow infection control advice. According to Tegnell, it’s about avoiding complications during childbirth.

When asked by a journalist why pregnant women are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19, he replies:

– Why don’t we know. But it is not uncommon for pregnant women to get sick from various infectious diseases. We will see if they have to be vaccinated, there is no data on whether it is safe. We need more information first.
