The coronavirus, municipality of Oslo | Infection rates in Oslo are stabilizing

– The speed of the increase has slowed, but the infection rate in Oslo is still too high, says health adviser Robert Steen. In one of the districts of Oslo, the arrows are still pointing upwards.

GRORUD AND ULLERN, OSLO (Nettavisen): – Should I spray my hands? asks Jeanine Mathisen when we get to the center of Grorud. She is the hostess of the mall and is ready with antibac at the entrance.

People stop and take a shower, and the majority, 78 percent according to Nettavisen’s small count of 55 random passers-by, also wear masks inside the center. Those with whom we met are fully aware that the district ranks among the best when it comes to pressure from infections in Oslo. The number of new infection cases does not appear to be decreasing here either. Here, the Grorud district now stands out from most other districts.

When Nettavisen asks people in the district why Grorud is so high in the corona stats, we get different answers. Some believe it has to do with overcrowding and many under the same roof, others point to travel habits, how people work or that information on infection control may not have reached all people with one language well enough other than Norwegian. The impression when we ask is that most people know how to take care of and follow the rules about distance and the use of face masks.

– Now I even see people with masks on the floor above, says an old woman from Kalbakken.

At the Joker store in Kalbakken, they have skins at the checkout, antibac is at the entrance, and most customers have skins as well, although there is no shortage of space when we are there.

– We remind customers of the masks and the distance. On Sundays, we have a guest host who is at the door and makes sure that only eight customers come in at a time, owner Jabran tells Nettavisen.

An hour’s public drive west, at the CC Vest shopping center in the Ullern district, there are also hosts who make sure infection control rules are followed. Here, Nettavisen’s count (58 clients) shows that up to 95 percent wear face masks downtown.

Big differences between districts

Our informal count east and west of Oslo obviously does not prove anything about attitudes towards infection control, but there are big differences between districts. In Ullern district, they have the lowest number of infection cases in the entire district since March: 353. The corresponding figure for Grorud is 565, while Alna has the highest number overall, 1069.

Tuesday’s figures show that four districts in Groruddalen in Oslo – Bjerke, Grorud, Stovner and Alna – continue to have the most infection pressure in the capital, but the increase generally shows signs of slowing down a bit. In the Grorud district, on the other hand, the infection rate appears to be steadily increasing, the latest crowning figures from the Oslo municipality show.

– Several shoots take effect

– Recently, we have seen high infection rates in the Bjerke district. This is due to several outbreaks that have a large impact on the infection rates in the district. There are outbreaks in the care of Årvoll and the War School and cases of infection in the district’s schools, which has led to many classes being quarantined, health adviser Robert Steen tells Nettavisen.

Regarding the Grorud district, which is the Oslo district with the second highest infection pressure, Steen points to a larger outbreak in a single school as an explanation:

– In Grorud, there have been outbreaks in a school with 42 infected, and that is probably the main reason for the high ratio per 100,000 in the last 14 days. This is a small district in the context of Oslo with 27,000 inhabitants, he says.

He points out that several districts have many individual cases in schools, as well as infections in homes.

The health council says districts do well with infection detection, testing, and quarantining and isolating people.

– See certain effect of measurements

– My encouragement to individuals and businesses is to be careful to follow the rules that apply now and to be tested if they think they may be infected. Then we will reduce the infection and we can open up more to society again. We have done it before and will do it again, he says.

– How should we interpret the latest Oslo infection figures and development in the last 14 days? What is positive and what worries?

– We are already seeing a certain effect of the measures. In week 47, 1,265 new infections were registered. In week 46, the weekly number was 1197. The percentage increase from week 46 to week 47 was 5.7 percent. This is a smaller increase than in the previous weeks. Therefore, it can be said that the “speed” of the increase in infection rates has slowed somewhat than in previous weeks.

Steen says that he thinks things are going well now, but that it is too early to relax:

– I am cautiously optimistic, but the infection rate remains high. It’s too early to shrug now. There is still a lot of infection and many of the ones we tested are diagnosed with corona.

2422 infected in 14 days

Crowning figures for the municipality of Oslo on Tuesday showed 164 infected in the last 24 hours. The average of the last week is 176 infected per day. In 14 days, 2,422 new cases of infection have been registered.

The number of infected in the last 24 hours is 15 more than the previous day. On the same day last week, 198 cases of infection were registered.

Most of the people in the age group 20-29 are still infected, where the number in the last 14 days is 547.

The districts of Bjerke and Grorud therefore have the highest infection pressure. In the Bjerke district, 245 new cases have been registered in the last two weeks, corresponding to 733.1 cases of infection per 100,000 inhabitants.

On par with the Czech Republic, Hungary and Bulgaria

In Grorud district, 193 new cases have been registered in the last two weeks, corresponding to 696.6 cases of infection per 100,000 inhabitants.

Figures from Bjerke and Grorud are on par with infection pressure in countries like the Czech Republic, Hungary and Bulgaria now, figures from the European Infection Control Agency ECDC show.

In the Bjerke district, the infection rate has stabilized somewhat in recent days after a preliminary peak of 769 before the weekend. In the Grorud district, the increase appears to continue. On Friday, the infection rate was 620.8. Now it is up 75.8.

Vestre Aker – lowest in Oslo

The Vestre Aker district has the lowest infection pressure in Oslo with 71 new cases in the last two weeks. This corresponds to an infection pressure of 141.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. In the last 14 days, 71 new cases of infection have been registered in the district. In the second best place is the Ullern district with 60 new cases of contagion, which corresponds to 173.6 cases of contagion per 100,000 inhabitants.
