In 2017, the class company DNV GL (formerly Veritas) awarded KMN “Helge Ingstad” a new class certificate until 2021. The approval came after a 5-year inspection carried out in 2016.

Test stopped

In AIBN’s preliminary report on the accident, it was revealed that the hollow propeller shafts allowed the water to quickly spread out. The Defense Ministry believes that DNV GL should have disclosed this, writes Teknisk Ukeblad.

The day one year after the accident the summons was sent. The trial was halted this spring pending a final report from the AIBN. A new time has been set for the main hearings at the Oslo District Court from September 21 to October 29 next year.

Unfounded claim

Chalotte Bjørn, Head of Communications at DNV GL – Maritime Northern Europe, confirms the call to Teknisk Ukeblad. Explain that admission to the class is based on drawings and information they received from the Armed Forces.

– We have thoroughly reviewed the case and believe that the claim is unfounded. There is no basis for liability, nor is there a causal link between the admission to class for which DNV GL was responsible and the “Helge Ingstad” shipwreck and subsequent loss, he writes.
