That’s why America sends a nuclear submarine to the Persian Gulf – NRK Urix – Foreign News and Documentaries

Photographs of the USS Georgia have already been released by the United States Navy. The photos were taken on Monday and posted on Christmas Eve.

It probably has a purpose. The United States will continue to intensify its military presence in the Persian Gulf.

By sending a nuclear-powered attack submarine, the Americans are sending a clear message.

The plot says that the Americans will use military force if they believe it is necessary. The United States will strike back if Iran goes on the offensive.

An American nuclear-powered submarine in the Persian Gulf will at the same time be perceived as a clear provocation. The Iranians know that it is the first time in eight years that the United States has sent such a warship to this area.

General Frank McKenzie says the United States is ready to respond to Iran's attacks.

America is ready

The Commander-in-Chief of the United States in the Middle East is Frank Frank McKenzie. He says the United States is serious. On Sunday he met with reporters in Washington.

Then the USS Georgia headed for the Persian Gulf.

McKenzie reiterated that the United States is “prepared to respond” if Iran attacks.

The United States did something similar in April 2017. At that time, the USS Michigan nuclear submarine was shipped to Busan in South Korea. The situation on the Korean peninsula was then very tense. North Korea was feared to attack its southern neighbor.

The United States sent the USS Michigan to the area to show the North Koreans what to expect if there was a war.

Increasing pressure on Iran

For Iran, it is a challenge for the USS Georgia to be outside its borders. Joins the ranks of recent strategic military defeats.

On November 27, Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed in an assassination attempt. Iranian authorities were quick to point out that Israeli intelligence was behind the murder.

It is probably assumed that the United States, with close ties to Mossad, was involved in some way. The Israelis have claimed that Fakhrizadeh previously led the Iranian nuclear weapons program.

It is only a few days before the Iranians celebrate for a year the liquidation of high-ranking general Qasem Soleimani.

He was the commander of the Iranian Quds Force. It is the elite force of the Revolutionary Guard. Soleimani was also responsible for Iranian intelligence and secret Iranian military operations.

Soleimani was killed in a US-led attack on January 3. The United States assumed responsibility for the liquidation. The attack came on the orders of Donald Trump.

The Iranian authorities have declared that they will avenge the liquidation of Soleimani.

By sending a nuclear-powered submarine to the Persian Gulf, the United States may want to warn Iran. The first anniversary of the liquidation should not make the situation worse.

Bombers and aircraft carriers

In recent weeks, the United States has also demonstrated in other ways that it is militarily present in the Persian Gulf.

On December 10, two US B-52 bombers were observed over the Gulf area. These planes can carry atomic bombs.

Attack submarine

It is not a coincidence that the USS Georgia was sent to the Persian Gulf. The ship is based in Kings Bay, Georgia. The USS Georgia is now connected to the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet stationed in Bahrain. The submarine belongs to the so-called Ohio class. They are known as strategic submarines.

By coming to know what it means, most people understand that they are fearsome underwater war machines.

In a war situation, it would be catastrophic for a state, such as Iran, to have such a vessel close to its own land.

USS Georgia is almost 171 meters long and has a crew of 160. Submerged, the ship has a top speed of 25 knots.

The USS Georgia can be equipped with up to 154 Tomahawk rockets. The missiles have a range of 160 miles in all directions.

This is the distance between Hamar and Tromsø.

Several of the Ohio-class submarines can also be equipped with nuclear ICBMs.

In addition, the vessels can carry 46 torpedoes to hit other submarines and surface vessels.

The Ohio-class can also carry a force of up to 66 special maritime forces soldiers. These units can be used for intelligence missions or other special operations.

Will contribute to stability

– USS Georgia supports maritime security operations in the region.

That’s what Rebecca Rebarich explains. She is the spokesperson for the United States Navy Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

– With the presence of USS Georgia, the United States shows its obligations to its regional partners. The United States has a wide range of capabilities to be able to defend itself against any threat at any time, Rebarich says.

The statement is not surprising.

The USS Georgia remains in international waters and does not do anything illegal that would legally violate other states.

However, there is little doubt that the presence of the USS Georgia is intended as a warning to Iran. The United States knows what it is provoking, but it has probably made an assessment of the situation.

They have concluded that it is better to show strength than to keep your distance.
