With a win, Liverpool could secure promotion to the Champions League quarter-finals.
But Atalanta had insidious plans and wanted to make up for the scorching 0-5 loss earlier this month.
They did brilliantly against an uncomfortable Liverpool who did not have a single shot on goal during the match.
The Italians were never particularly threatened by the red jerseys, and were finally able to cheer after a strong 2-0 win thanks to goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens.
– I don’t expect perfection in a game like this, but I know that all boys can play much better football. Our opponent was here and ready for a match, but he didn’t play brilliant football either, says Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp in an interview after the match.
Two goals in four minutes
After the hour, the visiting team went ahead. Josip Ilicic turned the ball into the net after a pinpoint post from Papu Gómez.
Just four minutes later, they dubbed Robin Gosens. The German was allowed to be alone within the hosts’ 16 meters and could easily make it 2-0 for the Italians.
Maradona is dead
This was also the first time Liverpool conceded two goals in a Champions League home game since 2014, this time against Real Madrid.
– Both situations in which they scored were very similar. But it is clear that we can defend ourselves. It was a deserved loss, I have no problem admitting it. The group is still open, Klopp says.
The Bergamo guests were the most dangerous from the beginning. Robin Gosens came in with an unexpected shot from an angle, but Alisson was on the scoreboard and had the ball stuck to the corner.
Liverpool still lead the group with nine points, while Atalanta is in third place, on points with Ajax.
