The Swedish Accident Investigation Board will analyze the hull of the passenger ferry “Estonia” to find out how the newly discovered hole in the hull arose.
They do not rule out new dives in the wreck, reports Swedish radio.
The ferry sank as it crossed the Baltic Sea from Tallinn in Estonia to Stockholm in 1994. 852 passengers lost their lives in the wreck. Since then, the ferry and most of the passengers have been buried on the seabed.
VG has previously written about the find, which was made by a Monster and Discovery Norway documentary team during a dive from the shipwreck in September 2019. The documentary series “Estonia: The Find That Changed Everything” premiered in late September this year.
It is currently unknown when and how the hole occurred, and if it had any consequences for the sinking process.
Director Henrik Evertsson and ROV operator Linus Anderson are accused of violating the peace of the tomb after the dive. The Grave Peace Treaty is an agreement between several countries that prohibits private diving in the area of the sinking. The case is scheduled to go to court in January.
The discovery generated strong reactions in the neighboring country shortly after the premiere. The incumbent ministers were summoned by the Swedish National Assembly and the Swedish authorities immediately started talks with Estonia and Finland about the next step.
According to Swedish radio, work on initial investigations is in full swing. They are carried out in collaboration with the AIBN of Estonia and Finland.
