Two men, who have been sentenced to 18 years in prison for murder in Sundsvall, Sweden, are fleeing the police.

This was stated by the Swedish police at a press conference on Tuesday.

The two were acquitted in the district court, but convicted in the appeal court and have not been placed in preventive detention in the meantime. Now they are gone.

A third man has also been convicted of the murder in question, but is already in prison for another crime.

– I haven’t experienced anything like this. As far as I know, it has never happened in Västernorrland, Josefine Perming Tengqvist, head of the department of serious crimes in Västernorrland, tells Aftonbladet.

– Should have been jailed

On January 7, the closing statements were made in the Court of Appeals. On January 12 they were sent to prison, but were not found, writes Expressen.

Now the police are looking for both of them, waiting for clues from the public. Police suspect that relatives or friends may have helped them stay in hiding.

– There is no indication that they have fled abroad, but it is not impossible, says the police chief.

The prosecutor during the trial, Marina Amonsson, has previously told Allehanda that she is not surprised by the escape, considering it took so long to incarcerate them.

– The best thing would have been that they were imprisoned immediately, he says.

Shot with nine shots

It was on December 12, 2019, when a man was found shot and seriously injured in his Sundsvall home. He later died from his injuries. According to the verdict, the man himself had opened the door to the perpetrators, who suddenly shot him. He tried to escape the shots, but was hit by nine shots from two pistols.

Witnesses saw three men in dark clothes running out of the scene. A dog patrol searched the area pointed out by witnesses.

The dog scored and the weapons were found in a tree, two kilometers from the scene. One gun was found hidden in a hat that same night, while the other was found a bit later.

100 meters from the same tree, he tagged the dog in an apartment. Shortly after, the two men left the apartment and were arrested. These are the ones who are now on the run. The owner of the apartment was arrested shortly after and remains in jail.

Drugs to Norway

Traces of shoes and DNA were later found on the weapons. All three were acquitted in the district court, which found that the evidence did not link them to the murder. In the Court of Appeal, new telephone evidence was presented, analysis showing where they were.

The motive for the murder is unclear, but the Court of Appeal points to an importation of drugs. According to the Court of Appeal, it appears from questioning that the victim allegedly cheated people for money in connection with an importation of drugs into Norway, where two of the convicts are mentioned by name, Expressen writes.

The three men convicted of the murder plead not guilty. The defender of one of the men who fled, Jacob Asp, claims that the court has overlooked the holes in the police investigation.

The other man’s defender, Mikael Westerlund, also reacts strongly to the verdict and believes it is based on a number of clues with various weaknesses.
