– We see that development is on the wrong track. The situation is very dire, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Many municipalities in Sweden have already tightened their infection control measures. Today, health authorities recommend that even more regions do the same.

The authorities advise Örebro, Jönköping and Halland to tighten the restrictions. Last week the councils in several municipalities were hardened.

Therefore, a total of seven regions in Sweden have introduced local infection control restrictions.

Considering national measures

Among the restrictions is that there should be no more than eight people around a table in cafes and restaurants.

The Prime Minister encourages Swedes to avoid parties, weddings and large funerals. It also urges avoiding contact with people you don’t live with and public transportation. He also recommends the home office.

– Everyone must refine and assume responsibilities. Not just for him, but for others and for our country, says Löfven.

Critics have responded that infection control measures are still only advice from national authorities, which local authorities have decided to follow..

The Prime Minister justifies local measures with the fact that the infection situation is different in different parts of Sweden.

– But if national measures are necessary, we will not hesitate to introduce them, warns Löfven.

The Prime Minister did not want to delve into what measures may be relevant.

Sharp increase in the number of infected

A total of 5,969 Swedes have died in connection with the coronavirus. 124,355 have been diagnosed with infection. That’s 3,188 more from Monday. 31 people have died in the last 24 hours. 553 patients are hospitalized with covid-19.

– There is a sharp increase in the number of infected. Hospitals in various places have noticed this, says the director general of the Swedish public health authorities, Johan Carlson.

He says that Swedes can still stop negative development together.

When asked why Sweden does not introduce a general requirement for face masks, Carlson responds that they currently do not believe this has a good enough effect, but that it may become relevant at a later date.

Swedish state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell says the infection is going in the wrong direction in several areas.

– Infection cases have doubled in the last two weeks. It is slowly but surely increasing in numbers in intensive care units, Tegnell says.

He says they also see a slight trend for the death toll to rise.
