Six permanent residents of Longyearbyen have been arrested and charged with violating drug laws. The governor has seized large quantities of weapons following the arrests.

– I don’t have a complete count, but with some of these people we are actually up to five guns. Almost everyone has had access to weapons, says NRK Lieutenant Governor Sølvi Elvedahl.

The six defendants are between 30 and 40 years old, and we are talking about both women and men. Most are Norwegian citizens. Elvedahl does not rule out further charges.

– This applies to both import, storage and use. We have seized smaller amounts of drugs, Elvedahl says in a press release.

All six were arrested overnight on Thursday and Friday morning, but have now been released after being questioned.

– The action is the result of a collaboration with the customs authorities, says Elvedahl.

The case dates back to 2019 and the seizure of a package in the Oslo area. When the case ended up at the Governor’s table, they tied it to a prior investigation and sent it to court for a search request to be granted.
