If you prefer strawberry flavored yogurt to vanilla, you have to pay much more for the price per kilo.

After Nettavisen wrote that there was a big difference in the price per kilo of Tine’s vanilla yogurt, the chains cut prices. Now only a few ears separate the price per kilo, regardless of the size of the yogurt cup you choose.

What’s great now, though, is that there is a very different price per pound for vanilla flavored yogurt and other flavors of Tine’s yogurt in Rema and Kiwi.

Please note that the price for a 850 gram cup of vanilla yogurt is only sold at Rema.

Rune Nikolaisen, who is behind Gjerrigknark.com, is not surprised that the chains adjusted prices for vanilla yogurt after the Nettavisen case, but they did not do so on articles that were not specifically mentioned.

– They seem to rush to change it when someone touches it. But it shows that the laid-back consumer suffers if they just buy a product without much thought about price, he says.

However, he responds that there is a big difference in price between the flavors.

– As a consumer, you have to feel a bit cheated, he says.

Serves unaware clients

Øystein Forås, a professor at NHH and an expert in the grocery industry, believes there may be several reasons for the large price difference between the flavors of Tine’s yogurt.

– One possible explanation is that they differentiate between price conscious customers and those who are not. They are trying to make money off unaware customers, he says.

Forås doesn’t think that everyone likes the taste of strawberry more than vanilla, but the chains will benefit from customers having what they want without thinking about the price.

– Not to mislead customers, but the chains are left with a higher margin on the type of yogurt that is more expensive, he says.

Another reason may be pressure on vanilla yogurt prices. So, however, the question is what leads to higher price pressure on vanilla flavor versus strawberry flavor. In this case, it is quite clear, as prices for vanilla yogurt dropped after Nettavisen focused on the price difference in different sizes of the same flavor.

Gunstein Instefjord, director of the Consumer Council, also says that the Consumer Council is not surprised that there may be price differences for fairly similar products.

– This may be due to different prices of raw materials, differences in production costs based on volume or different demand. There are free prices for the goods, he says.

– Price pressure

Nora Helgesen, Kiwi Communications Consultant, explains why there is such a big price difference between the flavors.

– The explanation is simply that there is strong pressure on the prices of vanilla yogurt. It’s a popular product, she says.

She says vanilla yogurt is artificially low in price, but due to price pressure, this flavor type is much cheaper than, say, strawberry yogurt and meloma and passion fruit flavored yogurt.

Rema 1000 also explains why there is a huge price difference in your tastes.

– There are always goods on which there is real price pressure, so they can sometimes be abnormally low, as in this case. Thus, customers can use the knife between low price chains and pay less for their yogurt, responds Calle Hägg, manager of public relations and communications at Rema 1000.

Nikolaisen at Gjerrigknark.com believes the explanation of the chains is just an excuse.

– They say the same when there are also other types of yogurt. Consumers don’t have a chance to verify the reason for their claim, he says.

– The stimulus should be to follow closely and perhaps choose a different element than what you initially thought, says Nikolaisen.
