Supermarkets, Wholesale | Respond to the crown action of Kiwi and Menu:

Kiwi and Meny leave Triple-Trump in December to prevent him from piling up with people at the store. The “stingy drug” reacts strongly.

On Thursday this week, Kiwi should have had a Triple-Trump, which gives members a triple bonus on the items they purchase. For infection control reasons, they cancel the day.

– Unfortunately, there won’t be a Triple-Trump in December this year, because we don’t want to plan for so many to visit the store on the same day. It will be wrong in the situation we are in now, says Kristine Aakvaag Arvin, Kiwi communications manager.

This applies throughout the country.

– We have a long way to go to cancel this day, but that’s the only thing right now, he says.

Multiple drop customer club days

Meny also launches Triple-Trump on Thursday.

– We don’t want to contribute to an unnecessarily high visitation to our stores on Thursday at a time when we are focusing on infection control and encouraging people to publicize their shopping trips, says communications manager Nina Horn Hynne at Meny.

Kine Søyland, Norgesgruppen’s communications manager, cannot say anything about whether all of his networks will leave Triple-Trump in December.

– But in general, I can say that we reduce the pressure of the campaign towards Christmas for the sake of infection control. We want to spread the trade as much as possible and avoid too many customers in the store at the same time, he says.

Expand the price offer

Arvin says they would rather encourage people to spread the trade beyond December and also try to avoid the busiest times of the day.

– We recommend customers to trade earlier than in other years. As of this week we are open on Sundays, and from experience we know that it is quieter the first two Sundays, he says.

At the same time, Kiwi encourages customers to shop alone, if given the opportunity, and to keep a good distance from other customers and employees.

– When we now have to cancel Triple-Trump, we will make sure there is no worse deal for clients. So we are extending the price cut that we were supposed to finish on December 1, he says.

With the growth that the Kiwi is experiencing, and the demanding situation that the corona pandemic has created for many, they are extending the price campaign until Christmas.

Respond to price cuts

Rune Nikolaisen, who is behind Gjerrigknark.com, criticizes the elimination of Triple-Trump this month.

– It’s tragic! They could have had the day more often then, if the crown is the cause, he tells Nettavisen.

He says he benefits from seeing gatherings of people buying in bulk and standing in long lines on Triple-Trump Thursdays.

– The stores have long hours, so they should not come to tell us that it is because of the crown they cut. It’s about money, he says.

Nikolaisen also reacts to Kiwi extending the price cut until December 24 when it eliminated Triple-Trump.

– It probably means they want more people in the store, so they probably shouldn’t extend the price cut, he says.

Believe that customers buy more

Arvin in Kiwi responds to Nikolaisen’s criticism and defends the choice they have made. She says they experience that there are more customers in the stores on Triple-Trump Thursdays, and that each customer also buys more and spends more time in the store.

Instead of encouraging our 1.6 million Kiwi Pluss customers to buy in a single Thursday, we think it’s much better to extend our big price cut until Christmas, he says.

The last two weeks Kiwi had Triple-Trump, Arvin says that sales from Wednesday to Thursday were 40 percentage points higher than the previous week. Precisely for this reason, Kiwi believes that it is correct to cancel the day of December.

– As Nikolaisen points out, we have long opening hours and in addition, customers have the opportunity to shop on Sundays in the future. We want to spread the word about holiday shopping as much as possible beyond now.

Tradition

Triple-Trump also had to be canceled in April this year, due to infection control considerations. But then they changed the day to July, a month that is not normally Triple-Trump.

Kine Søyland at Norgesgruppen says Triple-Trump has been around since 1997. Since then it has become a tradition for all of its chain stores, including Kiwi, Meny and Joker.

– Launched to give customers the opportunity to earn additional Trump bonuses on special occasions. The concept has worked well and customers have appreciated it, so it still has, he says.
