Strong earthquake in Croatia

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has been recorded 46 km southeast of the Croatian capital, Zagreb. It depends on the International Seismological Center, EMSC.

The earthquake was recorded by EMSC at 11.19 local time. Also yesterday there were several earthquakes in the same area. One of these had a strength of 5.2.

Deaths and several injuries have already been reported. In a statement, the Red Cross assures that the situation in the area is “very serious.”

Several injured

It is especially the city of Petrinja that has been hit by both earthquakes, but in yesterday’s earthquake no one is said to have lost their lives.

The local newspaper Jutarnji list writes that a child has been reported dead so far after today’s earthquake, while several people are said to be trapped in buildings.

According to ABC News, there should be more injuries. Some buildings are said to have completely collapsed and one of them is said to have hit a car.

– This is terrible. He’s dead, he’s hurt. We saw a child die in the town square. The city center is completely destroyed, the city mayor, Darinko Dumbovic, tells the online newspaper 24sata.hr.

Call for help to be sent to the city as soon as possible.

– People are panicking. They are looking for friends and family, continues the mayor.

The powerful earthquake could be felt throughout Croatia and neighboring Serbia and Bosnia, reports ABC News.

Croatian police are urging residents to get out and get away from buildings that could collapse.

– People who live high up should find a load-bearing wall, the police encourage even more.
