Storm is raging in Nordland: Police are considering evacuation in some areas

Nordland police say Monday night is especially in the southern part of Nordland and up to Salten where there have been most of the weather-related incidents.

The Rana River has crossed its banks and landslides have occurred in several places. In Rana municipality, 1,200 people are isolated and the Nordland police are considering evacuating people in Nevernes and Skonsenghavn in the municipality, as well as in Nervollen in Vefsn municipality.

– Police receive reports that people search for areas exposed to the weather. This can be dangerous as rivers can suddenly change direction, landslides can occur, and roads can close. Be careful and use common sense, says Nordland Police Chief of Staff Bent Are Eilertsen in a press release.

On Monday afternoon, there was an orange-level flow of water in many waterways in Nordland, according to the Norwegian Directorate for Energy and Waterways (NVE). There is a particularly large flow of water in the Rana River and in Vefsna.

Children left in kindergarten

The municipalities of Beiarn and Rana have established crisis personnel. Rana Mayor Geir Waage (Labor Party) said in a press release Monday night that life and health are now the main focus of the municipality.

– We are working to get an overview of who receives health and care services and to find solutions on how these services can be served. Isolated residents in need of emergency medical attention should call 113. An ambulance will then be called from Rognan, or a rescue helicopter, he says.

In a kindergarten in Storforshei, in the municipality, there are two children who have not been picked up due to the closure of the E6. Children are cared for by employees in the kindergarten.

At Storforshei School, there are between 40 and 50 students who are accommodated in other homes and around ten employees who have received alternative accommodation.

From Storfoshei and to the north, three base stations are also out of service and are now operated by a generator. This will eventually bring down power and mobile grids, police say, asking people to take precautions.

Closed roads

A large number of roads are closed, including the E6.

The Nordlandsbanen is also closed between Rognan and Bjerka due to a landslide, reports Bane Nor Twitter at 5pm on Monday.

– The preliminary opening forecast is September 22 at 15, writes Bane Nor.

The Nordlandsbanen line was previously closed between Mo i Rana and Dunderland.

Additionally, a number of speedboats and ferries were also canceled due to the storm. This includes five of the six ferry connections on county road 17 in Nordland, the so-called coastal road from Bodø and the south.

The snow line moved down

On Monday afternoon, the hazard warning was updated to the orange level. Southwest and later western storms are expected, with gusts of 30-35 seconds. The worst will be beyond North Salten and South Troms.

In addition, the snow line in Nordland has been reduced to 600 meters. This means that motorists passing through Saltfjellet and Beiarfjellet should prepare for the winter weather.
