An amateur diver discovered a completely new species of snail when he was diving in Ørland at Fosen in Trøndelag. Now the snail bears the name of the municipality.

Amateur diver and underwater photographer Kjetil Breivik Johnson had received advice from a friend and wanted to examine the snail with his own eyes. He had no doubt that it was a new kind of slug.

– It was incredibly fun to confirm. That an entirely new species has been found, diver Kjetil Breivik Johnson tells NRK.

The snails are about three inches long and stand out from other slugs by their brown stripes along the body.

NTNU researchers have helped identify the new species, which has been named Dendronotus yrjargul after the old Ørland municipality name “Yrjar”, as well as the yellow color that characterizes the colorful creature. (© NTB)
