Archaeologists begin excavation at Stavanger Cathedral on Monday. They want answers to topics like the process of Christianization in Norway and the rise of cities in the Middle Ages.
The Norwegian Institute of Cultural Heritage Research and the Archaeological Museum of the University of Stavanger will start the investigations on Monday.
The hope is to get an answer to what existed on the site before the cathedral was built and to find out why the city was established exactly where it is today.

Under the old floor of the cathedral there is an access space. There are, among other things, wood, textiles and tombs from the Middle Ages. This is the basement the archaeologists are now examining.
– If we find traces of the early church that should have been here, we can learn a lot about the city of Stavanger, the process of Christianization of Norway and about the emergence of cities in the High Middle Ages. These are topics of interest far beyond national borders, says archaeologist and project manager Halldis Hobæk of the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research in a press release. (© NTB)
