Throughout November, Oslo has been under social closure. In practice, this has been a public stop for all cultural events in the capital. On Thursday, the municipality of Oslo extended the strict infection control rules until December 14, and so Christmas will look very different.
– The majority indicate that it is necessary to live with the measures until 2020, says Councilman Raymond Johansen during Thursday’s press conference.
The spread of the infection in the capital remains high. In the last 24 hours, 176 new cases of infection have been registered in Oslo. That’s 14 more than the day before.
It is still the Grorud and Bjerke districts that have the highest infection pressure.
– Although infection rates in the city seem to be decreasing, I am concerned about infection in some districts, says Raymond Johansen.
Various traditional Christmas events can now disappear from the calendar.

Kurt Nilsen’s Christmas concert at the Oslo Spektrum is one of the events that must be canceled. For eight years, Nilsen, unofficially crowned the “king of Christmas concerts”, has held a concert at the Oslo Spektrum.
– Unfortunately, this means that Oslo Spektrum cannot be implemented due to infection control rules. We must do so with great regret, Kurt Nilsen’s manager Jan Fredrik Karlsen tells Dagbladet.
Dagbladet has repeatedly covered the situation of the Scenekvelder company, which produces “Reisen til julestjernen” for the popular theater. They may now have to cancel various performances, and have previously said that they are unsure of their own future at the Folketeateret.
– We have to cancel several shows, but now we are waiting for a clarification from the Ministry of Culture of what this will mean for us, says producer on Stage Evenings Karianne Jæger to Dagbladet.

Public stop
The extension of infection control measures means that all cultural events in Oslo that will be held before December 14 must be canceled. This applies to everything from stage performances, arena concerts, and church concerts.
Furthermore, all cinemas in the capital will be closed until mid-December.
Several cultural institutions in the city, which have not received a response to their request for money from the stimulus scheme, may face millions in losses. The reason is that they are transferred to a compensation scheme that only covers 50 percent of the losses found while playing. The incentive plan would cover nearly 100 percent of organizing costs during the pandemic.
Raymond Johansen asked the government to develop local crisis packages for the most affected sectors of the city.
– Many of Oslo’s core companies are in danger of disappearing. That is why I come today with an emergency call from the Oslo City Council: We need a separate package of measures for Oslo, especially targeting nightlife and tourism, and especially towards areas with higher unemployment, says Johansen (Labor) at a conference press release Thursday afternoon.
