On Tuesday, there can be up to 6 inches of snow in eastern Norway.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a warning about the first snowfall this year in southern and eastern Norway, which could lead to chaotic conditions on the roads.

– There are usually some challenges with the first snowfall in southern Norway. So it’s probably a surprise to many, says state meteorologist Charalampos Sarchosidis of the Nettavisen Meteorological Institute.

– It turns smooth and white

The snow line will be around 200 meters, which means that there will be snow in much of eastern Norway. According to the meteorologist, there will be between 5 and 15 centimeters of snow.

– Those traveling to Oslo on Tuesday morning should expect some places to be slippery and white. While on the return there will probably be better driving conditions, because it will be softer and the precipitation will turn into rain, says Sarchosidis.

The exception is coastal areas, such as central Oslo, where there will be sleet and rain.

– But it will arrive like snow in Holmenkollen, and you will not be far from Oslo before it snows, adds the meteorologist.

First in Sørlandet

Already on Monday afternoon there will be snow in the highest areas of Sørlandet.

– There is precipitation approaching from the sea. Agder and Rogaland will receive precipitation as early as Monday afternoon, and there will be snow at more than 200 meters. But if you’re in Kristiansand, Arendal, or Kragerø, you can be sure it will rain, he says.

From night to Tuesday, the area of precipitation shifts to eastern Norway.

– There will be a lower snow limit tonight and on Tuesday morning, and then during the afternoon it will be softer and change to rain, says Sarchosidis.

– Snow all day

The higher and further inland you are, the longer the snow will last.

– Lillehammer and several places in Innlandet County can get a lot of snow and there will be snow all day, says the state meteorologist.

– Is it winter now?

– I’d rather say it’s autumn. This is a little taste of winter and then it turns to rain and goes soft pretty quickly, he says.
