Snow and icy polar air on the way: – Looks like winter is here to stay

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute issued a high altitude snow hazard warning in various locations in northern Norway since Wednesday night.

“The snow line will change in the coming days, but West Finnmark and Troms can have snow up to 200-400 meters, while in Nordland, north of Helgeland, the snow line will be 400-700 meters. Locally, it can reach 5-10 cm in 24 hours ”, it sounds.

Warns motorists

The state meteorologist on duty at Vervarslingen in Tromsø, Charalampos Sarchosidis, explains the winter outlook in more detail.

– In the first instance, it is the mountain passes that snow, and we have sent a warning so that people with summer tires are aware of this. We often see that snow can surprise people a bit, he says.

Finally, the snow line also slides down.

– The city of Tromsø escapes the snow until Friday. Until then, it is raining in the lowlands. But on Saturday there may also be a snow storm in the city. But there won’t be large amounts, because what happens on Saturday is that precipitation decreases as the temperature drops, he says.

More cold weather

Looking ahead, it seems that we can only welcome winter, because the forecast for next week is for freezing temperatures throughout the region.

– We receive cold air masses directly from the north to the north of Norway. From Sunday it will be less degrees. It looks like winter is here to stay, says Sarchosidis.

– Will there be snow this week too?

– It seems that the rainfall is staying at the far end of the coast, so it will probably be mostly a climate to stay at home, he says.
