It is the afternoon of August 9, 1982. 55 people are seated around the tables of the Chez Joe Goldberg restaurant on Rue des Rosiers, the old Jewish quarter of Paris.

A grenade is thrown at the restaurant. Two men burst into the room, each pulling out a submachine gun and firing wildly around him at the packed restaurant. They run away again, throwing a new grenade to cover the retreat.

At the exit, they empty the magazines of the Polish-made submachine guns to the people on the sidewalk, before disappearing into the chaos. According to the French arrest warrant, the Norwegian Palestinian has been identified in a photograph as one of the shooting men.

French police believe that the investigation has revealed that Skien’s man was part of the terrorist group for several years.

Former members testified

– He does not recognize any of this, says one of the Norwegian’s defenders, lawyer Ole-Martin Meland, to NRK.

At the Oslo District Court, where the ban on the proceedings was removed, it was learned that the French police were basing the case against the Norwegian on the explanations of two former members of Abu Nidal’s group.

The two witnesses have pointed to the Norwegian Palestinian and two other men who are still alive, one in Jordan and the other in Palestine.

The two former members, among other things, were promised an amnesty and a UK residence permit in exchange for the revelations, according to the French weekly Paris Match. The defendants believe it is problematic that the evidence is based on such agreements.

– In Norwegian criminal law, we do not operate with amnesties as we do in France. For us, its advocates, this is problematic, Meland says.

Paris Match has also written that the Norwegian denies any relationship with Abu Nidal.

The reason the PST went to arrest the Norwegian now is because a new arrest warrant agreement between Norway and Europe came into effect last year. Facilitate and expedite the extradition of Norwegian citizens who have broken the law in other EU countries.

Switch group

The terrorist attack in Paris was completed in less than a minute, but the investigation has taken almost 40 years.

Six people died and 22 were injured. Abu Nidal’s organization was behind the attack, according to French police.

Abu Nidal once belonged to the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). When the PLO in 1974 gave up the use of terrorism, Nidal broke out and formed the revolutionary council of the extremist group Fatah, better known as the Abu Nidal organization.

The man accused of terrorism, who is now detained for four weeks, is linked to the organization and to the attack on a restaurant in Paris in 1982. French police have tried to extradite the man for five years.
