Shock start for Carlsen: – It means more to me to beat Magnus than to win the tournament.

– It’s special to beat Magnus, it was a shame for him that he made the mistake. It means more to me beating Magnus than winning the tournament, says Daniil Dubov after taking Magnus Carlsen off the Champions Chess Tour on Wednesday.

Magnus Carlsen was very disappointed and it ended after 0.5-2.5 for Daniil Dubov. After the defeat, the Norwegian got angry.

After he finished 2-2 after Tuesday’s first four quarterfinal matches, it was all decided on Wednesday. Carlsen came out crooked and lost the first game after two weak moves early in the game. After they both ended up in time trouble, Dubov sacrificed the queen, and shortly after, Carlsen had to surrender.

On the monitors, Carlsen seemed to have a good chance of countering immediately and drawing 1-1, but Dubov finished strong and barely managed to secure a draw.

Dubov didn’t do that in the third game. He took advantage of a big mistake by Carlsen and won.

– It was very special to win. It’s special to win against Magnus. I feel a bit embarrassed to be so excited now, but this means a lot more to me than winning the tournament. I have to apologize, but now I’m very happy, Dubov told NRK after the win.

Carlsen left the room he was sitting in and playing after the loss. He was clearly very dissatisfied.
