Severe storms over much of the country

– What controls the weather now is a storm center, a strong low pressure that is close to the British Isles. It gives off fairly strong winds over large parts of the country, on-duty meteorologist Per Egil Haga at the Meteorological Institute tells NTB.

In the south, the low pressure adds a strong gale to a small storm along the Skagerrak coast, and strong gusts inland. It also gets a lot of rain østafjells. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute on Sunday issued a yellow warning of danger for gusts in southern Norway and parts of eastern Norway. A total of 67 hazard warnings have been issued.

– It tends to be a bit stormy at Christmas and New Years, and we must say that it is the Christmas storm this year. Off the coast of Sørlandet and east towards the Oslofjord area, the wind has barely picked up in the middle of a storm, and the gusts have hit quite a bit inland Make add.

In several places, trees have been reported to have blown up and blocked roads or downed power lines. A large amount of rain also creates a flood hazard in several places, including the Akerselva in Oslo, where several companies have received water in the basement.

Monday a little quieter

In western Norway, it is expected to be a bit calmer and less precipitation, but in the northwest there will be strong gusts locally. On Sunday, a yellow gust hazard warning was issued for Møre og Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag.

On Monday, the low pressure will gradually move south and weaken, leading to less wind activity and precipitation.

– But in the eastern mountains, there will also be falling temperatures, so the transition zone between snow and rain will sink further into the terrain. There will probably be sleet and snow almost all the way to shore, so it can still be quite challenging weather. Haga says.

Several mountain passes in southern Norway are closed on Sundays or there is column driving due to weather conditions.

Danger warning for Northern Norway

In the northern part of the country, a yellow wind gust hazard warning was issued on both Sunday and Monday.

The hazard warning applies to Helgeland, Saltfjellet, Salten and Ofoten, Troms and Western Finnmark. On Monday, gusts of 27-30 meters per second are expected in exposed areas.

– It is a very strong wind that can do some damage, say the meteorologists.

When the low pressure weakens on Monday, the wind will eventually weaken here as well. Also in the north of the country, strong gusts of wind make it difficult to pass through the mountain passes, but it is expected that it will be easier to get through on Monday. Not much snow is expected in northern Norway, but there may be some in the border areas.

Power failure

Due to bad weather, the third day of Christmas there was a power outage in several places in Agder, Vestfold and Telemark.

In Larvik, more than 1,200 homes were without electricity for a period, according to NRK. Skagerak Energi informs the channel that the problems already started on Sunday morning and that they have been increasing throughout the day.

The main reason for power outages is trees falling on power lines due to the wind.

Agder Energi has also been placed on a yellow alert due to the storm. In Agder, 2,000 customers were without power on Sunday afternoon, according to Agderposten.
