Several infected when touching a surface – VG

Trondheim city chiefs have seen cases of people becoming infected with corona through surfaces such as glass, handles or tables in the last week.

Most coronary heart disease occurs through close physical contact. But infection can also occur when a person touches the same glass or table as you. The infection spores in Trondheim have experienced this in the last week:

– There are some examples that indicate that indirect infection through a common point of contact has been decisive for the infection, the municipality wrote in a press release last weekend.

Chief Physician Eli Anne Skaug is one of the leaders in tracking infections in the municipality. She tells VG this week that among the 49 infected, she estimates three or four of them are infected from having touched a surface.

It constitutes between six and eight percent of those infected.

The superior believes that this is likely because some have not had direct contact with each other.

– For example, restaurant employees can get infected from silverware and cups, things that often contain bodily fluids.

The mutated variant may play a role

The municipal chief doctor, Tove Røsstad, has previously said that much of the infection has spread to the Lille London pub. The virus that caused the outbreak has also been shown to be a mutated variant that appears to spread more easily.

When a virus is more easily transmitted, a smaller amount of virus is needed. Hence, Skaug believes it may be related to infection on the contact surfaces they now see:

– We imagine that you continue to touch something that an infected person has touched.

– Can’t they also have been infected by air, even if they didn’t sit near the pub?

– There is little evidence that this virus is transmitted through the air. In March, there was a lot of discussion and intensive research about it, so they ended up being too heavy to be transported through the air and fell quickly, says the superior.

NIPH: Trondheim virus has shorter labels

The latest NIPH figures show that the most common place of infection is a private home (40 percent), followed by work / college (16 percent). Then, private event (16% and place of service (6%). In 15% of cases, the presumed place of infection is unknown.

It is not clear exactly how much of the infection comes from a common point of contact, but this type is assumed to fall under the category “unknown site of infection” when detected.

Nakstad: wash your hands

Deputy Health Director Espen Nakstad tells VG that the virus can survive on different surfaces and probably also spread through common contact surfaces in some cases.

– When infection occurs indoors among people who have not been around, it may be due to infection through common contact points.

It adds that infection can also occur when a sick person passing by sneezes while passing other people, or if you are in rooms with limited ventilation for a long time, which is called an airborne infection.

– It is difficult to know which of these transmission routes has actually occurred in Trondheim. But it shows that it’s still good advice to wash your hands, cough / sneeze into your elbow, and keep a good distance from others.
