Large ice plugs and ice waves have formed on the river as a result of the mild climate and rainfall.

Six housing units have been evacuated, the Trøndelag police district said in a press release on Sunday.

The evacuation will temporarily last until Monday at noon, but residents must prepare for an extension, the municipality says.

– This is continually evaluated. We promise to have a good dialogue with the evacuees and help them with practical things, says Stjørdal municipal director Tor Jakob Reitan.

Ask people to stay away from the river.

Police and the municipality have been monitoring the river overnight until Sunday, and the situation has been under control since Sunday night.

– There hasn’t been a rise in the river overnight, and that’s a good sign, Sheriff Kjetil Ravlo told NRK on Monday morning.

The fact that a lot of rain was reported on Monday is an uncertain time.

– Right now there is no acute danger to life and health, and this is how we want it to remain. Then we are in and we follow both the water level and how the ice plug moves.

Although things have not developed, the police ask people to stay away from the river.

– We have received comments that people are curious and we understand that this is interesting and exciting. But there are great forces of nature at play, and while it’s nice and stable now, we encourage people to stay away from the ice’s edge today too, says Ravlo.

At present, there is no need for further evacuations, but if necessary, the municipality will help.

Out with drone

The most critical area is the stretch from Hegramo Bridge to Ertsgaard. But there may also be a risk of ice plugs and flooding upstream.

The municipality of Stjørdal claims that the fire and rescue service of the Værnes region during Sunday has been on the march with a drone to get an overview of the situation.

“The drone imagery has provided us with valuable information in further planning for emergency preparedness work. During the day, we have been in contact with Nord-Trøndelag El verk (NTE) to get an overview of the water flow in Stjørdalselva and the condition of the reservoir is filled in front of the ice plug ”, the municipality writes in its press release.

Several roads closed

During the afternoon and evening of Sunday, there have been reports of several roads closed in relation to various waterways in other parts of Trøndelag.

In both Overhalla, Steinkjer and Verdal, county roads were closed on Sunday.

In Verdal, the road to Sandvika in Sweden was closed on Sunday night due to large masses of ice, Vegtrafikksentralen reports.

The great Namsen River is also filled with ice that will move downstream in a temperate climate.
