Several died after being run over in a German city

German police report on Twitter that four people have been killed and several injured after being run over by a car on a pedestrian street in the German city of Trier, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The driver of the car has been detained, the police confirm. According to the daily Bild, a 51-year-old German has been arrested.

The police came out and asked people to stay away from the center. They promise to return with more information, but emphasize that treating the injured has the first priority.

The city’s mayor, Wolfram Leibe, told SWR public broadcaster, that at least 15 people were injured.

– I’ve been downtown and I’ve seen it. It was horrible. It was a horrible sight. There was a shoe … the girl who wore it is dead, says Leibe according to the daily Bild.

The Volksfreund newspaper writes that the death toll is up to four. Police have also confirmed that a child is among the dead.

A witness tells the local Volksfreund newspaper that the car maintained a high speed through the pedestrian street and that people were flying through the air.

Witnesses also told SWR that the car was traveling at high speed.

City authorities have issued a warning and are asking residents to avoid the city center.

– There is a health person in the place. We cannot say anything about the background, whether it is terror or not, says Uwe Konz in the Trier police communications department to the Bild daily.
