Republican leaders in the Senate hoped to avoid a debate on all of Trump’s undocumented allegations of voter fraud. Josh Hawley shattered the dream.
On Wednesday, the Missouri senator said he would protest the election result. On January 6, both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States Congress will approve the vote in the Electoral College.
Democrat Joe Biden won the vote there with 306 votes, while Donald Trump received 232. Most Republicans in the House of Representatives have announced that they will vote for Donald Trump to win the election.
In the Senate, Trump’s party leadership has warned its allies not to do the same. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and his leadership group don’t want a debate that generates a lot of bad blood, before a vote that they lose anyway.
But if Hawley demands debate, he cannot be stopped.
– The least Congress can do is investigate cheating accusations and introduce measures to guarantee fair elections. But Congress has not acted, Hawley said in a statement.
The Washington Post writes that Republicans have no chance of overthrowing the election. For that, the Democrats are too strong. Several Republican senators have also declared that Trump lost the election.
The newspaper writes that an open debate in the Senate can create problems for many Republicans, who must balance the clear speech of the numbers and the voters who believe Trump’s cheating accusations.
Hawley is a possible presidential candidate in 2024, and the newspaper writes that he can use the debate to stand out.
