One of the 43 people on board the ship has been picked up from the water by the Japanese Coast Guard.
The man (45), a Filipino citizen, was discovered by a Japanese Navy surveillance plane while floating in the water with a life jacket and lifeboat.
The vessel registered in Panama is called “Gulf Livestock 1”. It sent an emergency signal from the East China Sea early Wednesday. It was then west of the island of Amami Oshima, southwest of Japan, according to the Japanese broadcaster NHK.
It’s unclear why the emergency signal was sent, but according to the man, the ship capsized before sinking.
Transported 5,800 cows
He must have lost an engine due to the storm surge caused by Typhoon Maysak. So it must have been hit by a wave before it capsized.
According to the survivor, the crew was instructed to put on life jackets while the ship capsized. It is said that he jumped into the water and did not see anyone else before being rescued.
The nearly 12,000-ton ship was carrying 5,800 cows in addition to the crew of 43.
A major search operation has been launched for the rest of the crew. According to the Japanese Coast Guard, the weather is improving in the area after the typhoon ravaged.
I was on my way to china
In addition to the Filipino man who has been rescued, there were 38 other Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians on the ship.
The Australian Foreign Office says they have contacted the families of the two Australians on board.
The ship, which is flying to Panama, left New Zealand on August 14 and was scheduled to arrive in China next Friday, writes Japan’s Kyodo News.
He was on his way to the port city of Tangshan, about 150 kilometers east of Beijing.
