Prosecutors said Tuesday there was sufficient evidence to prosecute Macchiarini on three counts of aggravated battery.

The doctor’s investigation was stopped in 2017 but resumed the following year. During the investigation, further evidence was obtained and interviews were conducted with people in Sweden, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain.

Macchiarini operated synthetic trachea on three patients at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna in 2011 and 2012. The patients are now dead and the prosecution believes they were exposed to major disorders.

The surgeon has been charged with serious bodily harm, but this has been changed into the charge of serious bodily harm. State prosecutor Mikael Björk believes that the transplants were carried out in violation of available knowledge based on research and experience.

In further questioning, Macchiarini has denied his criminal guilt after facing suspicion of aggravated assault.

Previously, the Italian doctor was found guilty of research fraud in an investigation. In addition to the cases in Sweden, he performed operations on several patients in Russia who later passed away.
