On Friday afternoon, Hilde Nordgarden posted a post in the group “What’s Happening in Kløfta” on Facebook. There he asked if more people would join in and light candles in connection with the tragedy in Gjerdrum.

– It’s something we have done in Norway when things like this happen. As far as I know, no one had taken that initiative then, he tells Romerikes Blad.

She herself lives just one kilometer from the border with the municipality of Gjerdrum.

– We live so close. It is a very short path, and we see the helicopters from the living room. We also have a lot of friends in Gjerdrum, so it affects us a lot, says Nordgarden.

– Personally, I don’t know anyone who is directly affected, but I know people who know people. With the exception of giving or showing compassion, there is not much we can do, he continues.

– A small initiative that others do in a big way

On Friday, she and her family were among the first to set candles at the Kløfta intersection in the direction of Gjerdrum.

On Saturday night, the sea of light has grown enormously and is filled with light at the Kløfta roundabout and along the entire Gjerdrumsvegen in the direction of Ask.

– It’s great if people are still there. I think it’s very nice and shows that people care. It started as a small initiative that others do in a big way, says Nordgarden.

During a press release at 9 pm, Deputy Mayor Leif Haugland also highlighted the initiative.

– I would like to highlight a moving event. The people of Gjerdrum have started lighting candles for the dead, he said.

Many images of the many lights and torches along the road are also shared on social media. Those working at the crash site are also greeted by the lights as they travel back and forth towards the avalanche.

– Good to hear that people appreciate it, says initiator Nordgarden.
