Several breeds of dogs are today victims of the systematic reproduction of appearances that weaken the health of the dog and lead to malformations and serious diseases, according to Animal Protection.

On Monday, the association summoned the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK), the Norwegian Bulldog Club, the Norwegian Cavalier Club and selected breeders of English bulldogs and cavalier king charles spaniel for violations of the breeding provision in the Animal Welfare Act.

Sickness and pain

They believe that these breeds are in a special position, more exposed to unfortunate but deliberate breeding that is guaranteed to cause disease and pain for dogs, and solely because of appearance.

– The lawsuit is filed against the breeders, because they are the ones who breed the breeds in violation of this provision. At the same time, it is important for Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge to emphasize that breeding is carried out in accordance with the rules and guidelines of the breed clubs and the NKK. These bear at least as much responsibility as the individual breeder, writes Dyrebeskyttelsen on the lawsuit.

In violation of the law

The lawsuit is based on the fact that the breeding is carried out in violation of section 25 of the Animal Welfare Act, which deals with breeding to promote traits that provide robust animals with good function and health.

According to Dyrebeskyttelsen, who is also criticizing the Norwegian Food Safety Authority for the lack of law enforcement, there has now been so much inbreeding and for so long that almost all the breeding of purebred dogs in Norway is no longer carried out on a regular basis. in accordance with this law.

The Norwegian Kennel Club was strict Tuesday in its comment on the notified lawsuit.

“We are aware that Dyrebeskyttelsen will file a lawsuit against NKK and we do not think it is natural to comment in the media on a case that has been reported and will be prosecuted in court,” media adviser Kjetil V. Johansen writes to NTB.
