It has been just over five weeks since Biden was announced as the winner of the election. But top Republicans have so far refused to recognize the winner of the Democratic election. Among them was the leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell.
But on Monday, the Electoral College formally decided the election. 306 of 538 delegates voted for Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. This is more than enough to exceed the magic limit of 270 that it takes to assume the presidency.
On Tuesday, the majority leader commented on the result.
Congratulations Biden
– The Electoral College has spoken. So today I want to congratulate incoming President Joe Biden, McConnell said from the Senate rostrum.
McConnell used the term “president-elect.” This is a title with many symbols in the United States. It is used if the future presidents in the time between the person who is elected and his incorporation.
McConnell said he had been in contact with Biden and congratulated him on the election victory.
The senator’s comment on Biden came at the end of a lengthy post. Here, McConnell had spent most of his time bragging about the Trump administration’s performance for four years.
Donald Trump still refuses to admit defeat. No later than Tuesday tweeted him his unfounded accusations that the election was cheated.

Other prominent Republicans have also finally accepted Biden’s victory.
Among them are Senators John Cornyn of Texas, Roy Blunt of Missouri and John Thune of South Dakota.
– There comes a point where you have to accept reality. Once the electoral college has made its decision, it is time to look to the future, says Thune. He is the deputy leader of the Republicans in the Senate.
What happens now?
On January 6, the two houses will meet in Congress. There, the votes of the voting board will be read and officially approved. Vice President Mike Pence chaired the meeting.
Once the votes are approved here, the result of the election is officially established. Then there is only the opening ceremony on January 20.
