– We share the intention to reduce food waste, but do not agree that 3-for-2 offerings contribute to more food waste, says communications manager Harald Kristiansen at Coop to Nationen.

On the occasion of the UN’s international food waste day on Tuesday, the Consumers Council came out and demanded an end to 3-for-2 offers from supermarket chains. The reason is that they believe that these offerings contribute to more food waste because they make people buy more food than they need.

Kristiansen says they use everyday products with a long shelf life when running 3-by-2 campaigns. So he believes consumers save money on the products they need.

Rema 1000 promised two years ago that they would eliminate offers as 3 for 2, arguing that it creates more food waste. They haven’t yet.

Public relations and communications manager Calle Hägg at Rema 1000 writes to Nationen that offers like 3 for 2 will apply to widely used products with good durability, which many will buy a lot, and can be mixed with other products.
