Silvia Romano (23), the Italian aid worker who was taken hostage in Kenya in 2018, and then captivated by the Islamist terrorist movement al-Shabaab in Somalia, arrived on Sunday with an Italian military plane from Mogadishu to Rome. There she was received by the family and by the Italian chancellor Luigi Di Maio, writes Corriere della Sera.

On Saturday, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced that the 23-year-old, who worked for the aid organization Africa Milele in Chakama, Kenya, had been released and would soon return to Italy.

It is not known how Romano was launched, but sources in the Italian newspaper suggest that between two and four million euros have been paid in ransom.

You could tell that the young lifeguard was dressed in a solid green veil that only made her face visible when she got off the plane. The explanation is that Romano has converted to Islam.

The young woman, who ensures that she is in good physical and mental health, states that

“I have not been forced to marry, and conversion to Islam was my own spontaneous choice.”

Security sources, on the other hand, tell Corriere della Sera that conversion can be

“A result of the psychological state he was in captivity.”

After returning home after a year and a half in captivity, Romano was immediately taken for questioning by the Carabinieri semi-military police special unit for the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
