Operations manager Johansen tells VG that most of the people on the island work in the Armed Forces or as meteorologists.

– There is a small group of people who work there for six months in a row. These deaths are something that affects all of Jan Mayen now, he tells VG.

The Armed Forces have their own station in Jan Mayen with 14 employees, in addition, four meteorologists are stationed there, NTB writes.

The island is located in the Norwegian Sea, about 1000 kilometers west of Norway, north of Iceland towards the Greenland Sea. Jan Mayen covers almost 380 square kilometers and has been in Norway since 1930.
