TRONDHEIM (DAGBLADET): On the day, a month after Åge Hareide took over at Rosenborg, the dream of playing in Europe ended this time.
PSV Eindhoven grew too strong in Lerkendal, and after the match the former national team coach revealed problems early in his reign to the pride of the people of Trøndelag.
– I think it has been difficult to go into the middle of the season and play games immediately, reveals Hareide at the post-game press conference on Thursday.
Since Hareide had his first day on the job at Brakka on September 1, things have been going well for the newly hired coach. His first training with the team was three days later and since then it has been an incredibly close wrestling program for the Trøndelag team.
Hareide’s First RBK Training: – A mistake
Hectic schedule
Following their debut against Strømsgodset on 13 September, Rosenborg have played six games with their new manager. With a maximum of four days between each game, there has been little time in training ground.
– Most of us have only played matches and we have recovered. There is little work we have done in the field. In terms of tactics, you have to start somewhere and the easiest thing is to make the team better and more solid defensively, and then we get to work from there on, explains Hareide on the problems.
Against PSV, it was precisely the offense that stood out as one of the reasons why there were no cheers and group matches in the Europa League on Thursday.
Rosenborg lacked speed in attack and created few chances. In the few opportunities Trøndelag had, the quality of the last third was not good enough.
Make a concession
– Difficult
When asked by Dagbladet what it takes to close the gap at teams like PSV, Hareide attracts more time on training ground.
– It’s difficult right now through the months that lie ahead. I think we have to spend more time on it and then we can hope that we will have a winter that is more normal compared to the crown. It’s been such a special season this year which means we’ve had little time to train lately actually because we only have to play matches, Hareide tells Dagbladet.
Thursday’s Europa League playoff games were a disappointing affair for Scandinavian football. In addition to Rosenborg’s departure, Malmö and FC Copenhagen also faced the last hurdle ahead of group stage matches in Europe.
– We see that it is difficult for Scandinavian football to reach the desirable level. But you have to work with that and have it as your goal and eye for Rosenborg to be the best they can be, says Hareide with experience in games in Europe, including Malmö.
Add an incredible amount of death
– advantageous
– We may wish Rosenborg to look like PSV, but we know there are slightly different conditions in relation to the clubs. Rosenborg has managed to beat the Dutch top a few years ago (Ajax in the 2017 playoff editor’s note), and we may wish to be on a level with PSV, Ajax and Alkmaar in the Netherlands, but it is difficult, says RBK. to train.
Already on Sunday, Trøndelag’s next match awaits at home against Odd. After the national team’s break next week, Rosenborg can finally look forward to a more normal match schedule. With no participation in Europe, Hareide men will avoid midweek matches well into December.
– If there is any advantage in not playing in Europe, then it gives us more time to practice. Then we have the whole week, and that’s a bonus. We must continue working with the most important thing in football, which is putting the ball in goal, concludes Hareide.
