Paris Saint-Germain 1–2 Manchester United
87 minutes of the match between PSG and Manchester United were played. It seemed to go against scoring points, but Marcus Rashford didn’t want any of that.
Against the same goal, Rashford pulled PSG out of the tournament a year and a half ago, charged with his right leg and dropped to sixteen meters.
The ball hit the right post and entered the net behind PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Thus, Rashford had inflicted another defeat on PSG in their own great hall.
– Of course it’s a nice feeling. But the most important thing is that we win the game. We are now in a good position in the group, but it is only the first match, Rashford told BT Sports after the match.
– It’s the start of the group stage game, but we’ve beaten a fantastic team. Last time it was a knockout round and it was euphoric. It’s sterile with no fans, but it’s still fantastic and we deserved to win, Solskjær thought.
Believed in Solskjær’s tactics
When Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team selection was announced an hour before the start of the match, several people raised their eyebrows. The Norwegian chose to field five defenders, and also smashed star Paul Pogba.
In hindsight, it turned out to be a good decision. United missed some great opportunities, and Pogba finally came in and gave the decisive pass to Rashford.
– As players, it is important to believe in the system that the coach chooses to use. We did it absolutely fantastic. It was tough, but we kept up the intensity, Rashford told BT Sports.
For Manchester United’s own television channel MUTV, the winner of the match said that Solskjær’s tactical approach to the match was a deciding factor in the victory.
– I think the manager hit the spot today. The system gave us the opportunity to express ourselves on the way forward and at the same time be close, he said.
Solskjær also praised the players for having faith in their tactical evaluations.
– I think they played the game exactly how we wanted. I wish them well, he told MUTV.
I had to shoot a penalty again
Before the game, the home team was the favorite. But after a little offense early in the first half, it was actually Manchester United who took over the game.
After 19 minutes, Anthony Martial sent a free kick high over the area.
Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty against Newcastle this weekend. Now he did it again. The penalty was not very well placed and Navas saved easily.
But the VAR images showed that Navas had stepped out of line too early. This gave him the opportunity to re-shoot the penalty.
Then the Portuguese Navas sent to one side and the ball to the other.
– Bruno has missed two penalties in a row, but he will not stop taking them. He showed concentration and character, Solskjær told BT Sports after the match.
Strange self-targeting
For the rest of the first half, United had more or less control of PSG’s star gallery, made up of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, among others.
But from the start of the second half, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel took action. Midfielder Idrissa Gueye came out and forward Moise Kean entered. At first glance, it seemed to help the French who put pressure on United.
But it was from a Frenchman at Manchester United that the home team should get help.
Anthony Martial was born and raised in Massy, a suburb of Paris. After 54 minutes, the referee signaled a substitution for FC.
Neymar on the corner at the near post. Completely depressurized, Martial jumped up and put his head close to the ball. He went the wrong way and entered the Manchester United goal in cash.
– He’s not upset or anything. So it’s a somewhat strange maneuver, said TV 2 expert Petter Myhre.
However, there was applause from United when Rashford decided the match just before the end.
– We know we need ten points to move forward. Next week’s game (against RB Leipzig) is very important. There are so many games, Solskjær said after the game.
19 important days
Aftenposten has previously written about how the away game against PSG is a six-game over the next 19 days that can define how Solskjær’s season at Manchester United degenerates.
Already on Saturday, Chelsea will visit Old Trafford.
Then it goes hand in hand with the Champions League match against RB-Leipzig, the Premier League match against Arsenal, the new Champions League match against Istanbul Baksehir and on the 19th the leader of the league, Everton, awaits out.
Victory for Leipzig and Sørloth
In the second group match, Norway’s Alexander Sørloth was an unused reserve for RB Leipzig.
The same was Fredrik Gulbrandsen for Istanbul Baksehir.
Leipzig won the match 2-0 after two goals from Angeliño and thus leads the group.
