A video in which a train conductor appears to strangle a dark-skinned girl goes viral on Instagram. The online newspaper examined the conditions surrounding the video, which shows a completely different story.
The Instagram user Racism in Norway (racisme_i_norge) with more than 28,000 followers has generated several debates in recent times. The man behind her, Jamal Sheik, took part in Dagsnytt 18 on Monday night for a discussion about Espen Eckbo’s Christmas series “Nissene over skog og hei,” which was published recently because one of Eckbo’s characters wears makeup from dark face and afro wigs.
Along with the nearly identical named Instagram page (racisme.in.norge), it sheds light on events in Norway that they believe are expressions of racism. The site recently helped a Kiwi employee quit her job after sending a racist message to her friends on Snapchat.

Racist driver?
On Saturday, the Instagram page shared a video clip of a few seconds long where he looks like a train conductor, who is an adult white man, takes his forearm around the neck of a young brunette. The incident is presented as an example of racism on the part of the driver.
The online newspaper decided to investigate the circumstances of the case. We have spoken with witnesses, examined internal reports, videos, and spoken with others on the Vy system.
Friday evening at 23:09 a train leaves Skien for Eidsvoll. There is a gang of young men at the Porsgrunn station. Six girls and a boy get on the train, while the others leave the station. Sources inform Nettavisen that the group is loud and rowdy. There is pushing and kicking the train.
The conductor enters the train where the youth gang is. None of them have tickets and the gang is coming from a party in Porsgrunn.

Sources explain that it took about ten minutes where the young people arrived with various explanations that they did not have tickets, where some went to the bathroom on the way – and explained that the other had the tickets, and the third and so on. Then the conductor asks them to get off the train if they don’t have tickets.
Therefore, the situation becomes significantly broader. Several in the gang yell insults like “fart”, “racist” and “fucking idiot” at the driver. He is also called “fat” and “Santa Claus”.
The conductor then gets off the train and calls the police. Then go in again. The youth gang receives clear messages to get off the train.
Some in the gang calm down and get off the train. There were only two girls left who did not want to go out, and the conductor pushed them out of the train. According to sources with whom Nettavisen has spoken, the driver knew that the entire session was filmed.
When everyone except one girl gets off the train, the other girl tries to get on the train again. This is where the conductor holds her from getting on the train, and based on the short video, it appears that the conductor strangles the girl. She is being held and the police will be here soon.
As this happens, the other girl takes out her cell phone and begins filming herself. She yells at the camera and yells “Stop hitting me.”
Two sources claim that several members of the group of friends were reported for robbery at the party that same night.
According to the girl who made the video and posted it on TikTok, it was the driver who behaved in a racist manner and assaulted young people, not the other way around. You can read his version below in the case.

The video that was posted by the Instagram page “racisme_i_Norge”, directed by Jamal Sheik, comes from a girl’s TikTok channel. But before Sheik breaks it down, it’s down to a few seconds and the driver’s face is slippery. The video only shows that the train conductor is trying to strangle the girl. Post this part of the video with the text:
«Hello Vy group! This is a case that we think you should address. The driver strangles a dark-skinned young woman, and you can clearly hear a crying voice … We’ll send you a no-load version of this, where the full clip is even a little longer. “
Followers of the site immediately argued that the driver should be fired and sent to prison in the comment section of the video.
The online newspaper has seen the longest, no-load version of the video. It shows shock and a lot of screaming, and that one of the people tries to strangle the train conductor. Later in the video the short clip appears where it appears that the driver is trying to strangle the dark-skinned girl.
However, on closer inspection, there is no absolute dominance. The girl puts her hands around her neck. The director then grabs her hand. The girl deleted the video from her own channel.
The online newspaper has contacted the editor. He does not want to express himself and refers to the Vys communication department.

– As I understand it, racism in Norway has escaped his face. We have had a good dialogue with the site to unravel the situation and understand what happened. It’s hard to form a picture based on a few seconds of glimpsing the situation, says communications manager Åge-Christoffer Lundeby at Vy.
Therefore, Vy investigated the case and reported the matter to the police. The train security camera recordings are protected and can therefore be turned over to the police if they wish.
– It is always serious when it becomes physical, and it is a great burden for our employees involved. But this does not stem from skin color at all. It is about the driver having the responsibility of ensuring safety on board, also selling tickets. When you don’t pay for that ticket, it’s common to turn down passengers.
Lundeby emphasizes that it is more common for passengers without a valid ticket to leave the train voluntarily, without the police being called. On board the train, there are surveillance footage and various witnesses shedding light on the case.

According to an internal Vy report that Nettavisen has had access to, the same gang is creating a commotion on another train that same night, involving another train conductor. When they boarded the train in Drammen to travel to Porsgrunn, according to the report, no one had a valid ticket. Instead, they lock themselves in a disabled bathroom.
After many discussions with the driver, he finally manages to get a valid ticket after everyone has to call and text to be tipped for the tickets. Since they only bought tickets halfway, they had to buy tickets once again, leading to a new round of confrontation between the driver and the group.
A completely different version
The 16-year-old girl who posted the video completely disagrees with the presentation from the other sources. He wants to remain anonymous, but Nettavisen knows his identity.
– We were going home after being with a friend. It was the last train going to Drammen and we were in Porsgrunn. I ran out of power on my cell phone. I just wanted to charge the phone and call my mom and ask her to tip me on a ticket, she tells Nettavisen.
She confirms that no one in the group had a valid ticket, but that they should call or text the parents to tip them for the tickets.

Then the discussion began between the director and the youth gang. He refused to get off the train until he was able to charge his mobile phone and talk to his mother. According to her, they went to the driver, and then he turned violent and strangled his sister for at least five seconds. Then the sister gives the girl the phone to film, so that she can later show it to the police.
The girl herself claims that when the police arrived, they did not believe her explanation.
– Do you think this wouldn’t happen if you were white?
– Yes, that is correct. Whether you are racist or not, you must not strangle, shove, or hit.
– Was it the case that someone from the gang hit or pushed the driver?
– Yes, it can happen, but it only happened after he strangled my sister. Then we get very angry.
She denies that there was any discussion on the train platform before departure.
The case is now being investigated by the police and Vy has obtained footage from a security camera on board the train.

Sheik won’t reply
Jamal Sheik, who is behind the Instagram account that shared the cut version of the video as an example of racism in Norway, has given his own email address for press inquiries. Sheik has not responded to our questions. A source informs Nettavisen that his comment was removed after he tried to correct the image by adding information about the incident. Then it was blocked.
Sheik has not responded to Nettavisen’s questions. However, he removed the video from the site and posted a text message about the incident Tuesday night.
“Hello! We have been told that there has been a situation where one that we posted has a longer video. We have never seen this video before, nor have they sent this to us before. First, a lot of the work that we do with children and Young people is built on trust. We cannot afford to make young people who contact us suspicious. “
