The Cultural Council sprinkles new millions beyond the elite Norwegian artists.
The Cultural Council recently awarded new scholarships to five artists. In total, the five artists have received NOK 69.9 million over the next five years.
The money goes, among others, to Henriette Pedersen, who according to the Cultural Council uses art to “argue against the norms from a queer and feminist perspective. Pedersen wants to examine the human fringe zone and show the indecency that one rarely indulges.
During the screening of his latest theatrical performance entitled Peer / Bitch, he tries to send a “hello” to Henrik Ibsen’s 153-year-old play.

In acting, she plays a “self-centered, cynical, smooth, agile, soft, docile, but enjoying life with endometriosis and a gluten allergy,” according to a review on the Scenekunst website.

– I sucked all I could
In 2018, The Waste Ombudsman Facebook page had a video of Henriette Pedersen’s presentation. She commented in the comment section:
– Shit! Here they threw money at me and I sucked all I could get through straws!
Regarding another performance, Pedersen wrote in the comment section:
– I have a lot of money to make art! And I’ll keep getting a lot of money for making art that you won’t like!
The online newspaper Pedersen sent an inquiry with questions about the award and whether the statement was intended to be funny or serious.
– Thank you for the request. I don’t have a chance to answer you now.

The online newspaper reporter asked when such an opportunity might arise. Pedersen has not responded.
Another person who receives a grant is the well-known Mette Edvardsen. According to the Cultural Council, Edvardsen often works with a minimalist expression and a stripped-down stage image. “Language, literature and movement, his performances are created by the imagination of those who listen, read or sit in the room.”
In acting, he repeats a series of English words as he moves around the room. She ends the show by saying “black” and closing her eyes.
Edvardsen will receive a total of NOK 10 million over the next five years. You can see the video of their performance here:
– To put it mildly, special
Himanshu Gulati is the cultural policy spokesperson for Frp. He has been anxious for a review of the Cultural Council’s grant system and will discontinue such scholarship programs.
– There is no one else in our society who receives up to four million crowns a year for five years in a row. Even municipalities, voluntary organizations, hospitals and other vital units have to fight for their grants every year and wait to see what they get, says Gulati.

The FRP politician believes that the money should have been used to help a cultural life that is struggling as a result of the crown’s rules.
– As a consequence of the coronary restrictions, a large part of the artists are on bare ground. A large number of cultural companies and artists are at risk of bankruptcy as a result of restrictions on the public and canceled events, Gulati explains.
– The fact that at that time five-year scholarships are awarded to some art institutions for almost four million crowns is, to put it mildly, a special signal to send, he says.
