In 2016, Erling Braut Haaland (20) was replaced in the last league game when Bryne was relegated from the Obos league. Today, four years later, Jærbuene only needs one point against Sotra to return to the 1st division, while Haaland is a superstar in “Der Klassiker” against Bayern Munich a few hours later.
Erling Braut Haaland has never hidden where he comes from. The 20-year-old has had red Bryne blood over the years and has made it common for the Norwegian people to hear harsh expressions like “gravel” and “drizzle” on national television.
The words “One Life, One Club” are plastered on the bridge to Bryne Stadium, and on Saturday afternoon the super forward will likely follow the kids’ club promotion game against Sotra.
Assistant coach Even Sel worked closely with Haaland when he was a male player at Bryne. Among other things, they often sat together for a long time and watched a video to discuss how the latter might unfold. When VG talks to him, he gets excited.
– I feel like it’s a bit more today. I’m doing. But the feeling is good. We have good confidence in ourselves in the team. We have performed well throughout the year. The only game we’ve lost this year was against Vard, when they sent off a man in the first place. If we do what we did earlier this year, it will work out, says Sel before kick-off at 1pm.
Haaland money bets
In Jæren, there are many emotions at stake on Saturday. The club has had to call in additional security personnel to ensure that the 600 allowed spectators do not storm the field in the event of a promotion. They have to abide by the rules of the crown, but the euphoria will be there anyway if the necessary point is secured.
For head coach Jan Halvor Halvorsen, men need naked draw against Sotra to be ready for the 1st division, after competing at one of Norway’s two highest levels for 45 consecutive years before relegation in 2016.
– It will mean a lot if we can do it. We feel like we belong there. We have a tradition of being at the highest levels in Norway, and we have worked hard for several years to come back again, says Sel.
It is clear to him that the club’s firm commitment to the top of Norwegian football is largely made possible by one man: Erling Braut Haaland.
It is through the proceeds that Bryne has received from reselling the striker in recent years.
– Erling has contributed to the fact that it has been sold. First to Molde, then to Salzburg and Dortmund. The money that has come in has helped us maintain a good investment. Then there is the motivation to see what you are doing. He is an inspiration to everyone who works here at Bryne Football Club, says Sel.
– Great day
In Sel’s description of the team’s strengths in 2020, one recalls the associations of Bryne’s major editions, which included names like Gabriel Høyland, Rangvald Soma and Alfie Haaland.
– We have a lot of power to run and duel strength. We have also been very good on the counterattack, says Sel, who has a lot of faith that promotion will be assured.
Jærbladet commentator Marcus Sikveland thinks so too.
– Bryne are big favorites. Sotra remains with five losses in a row. It’s a very small bomb if Sotra gets away with points here. It was 5-2 for Bryne and leading the last time the teams met, Sikveland tells VG.
Look forward to the start of the game.
– It’s a great day for Bryne and everyone who loves the club. It’s been many difficult years, culminating in relegation in 2016. After coming dangerously close to relegation to the Norwegian Tipping League last year, it finally looks like it will be a long-awaited rebound. And Jæren needs Bryne back in top football.
The settlement is dispatched directly to Jærbladet starting at 12.30. The start is at 1:00 p.m. Braut Haaland himself will play at Signal Iduna Park against Bayern Munich at 6.30 pm.
