– You have to put someone on the case. This is serious, says Donald Trump.
President Donald Trump is asking Attorney General William Barr to launch an investigation into his rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
The AP news agency writes that this is the first time that Trump has asked Barr to launch an investigation into Biden and his son.
The president has repeatedly shared a New York Post article, which mentions an alleged meeting Hunter Biden had arranged between his father Joe Biden and an employee of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma.
Joe Biden was then vice president of the United States.
– We must get the Minister of Justice to act. You have to act and you have to act fast. You have to put someone on the case. This is serious corruption and must be known before the election, Trump said in an interview with Fox & Friends.
– Not on the calendar
Joe Biden’s campaign team has commented on the allegations, saying there is no meeting between Biden and any Burisma employees on their calendar. Biden himself denies doing anything wrong.
Trump has repeatedly accused Biden of corruption without being able to document the allegations. He has yet to say anything about the specific crimes he believes Biden has committed, but has nevertheless indicated to voters that Biden belongs to prison.
Now he seems to want to make this a key issue less than two weeks before the presidential election and just before meeting with Biden in a televised debate on Thursday night US time.
The Justice Department has yet to comment on Trump’s call for Barr to launch an investigation into Biden and his son.
Lucrative board fees
Hunter, Biden’s son, sat on Burisma’s board of directors for a period while his father was Barack Obama’s vice president. Trump has claimed that Biden used his position to secure his son a very lucrative salary at the company.
When recently leaked emails allegedly written by Hunter Biden surfaced, the case gained new relevance.
The emails were on a computer accessed by Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, leading to articles about the content of the emails in the Murdoch-owned New York Post.
This week’s case prompted 50 former intelligence leaders to move in to say it was all reminiscent of a Russian intelligence operation.
Anonymous sources said last week that the FBI is now investigating whether the emails were intentionally leaked to Giuliani by Russia to damage Biden’s candidacy.
The hard drive with the emails is said to have come from a laptop that had been in a computer store in the state of Delaware for a year, where it was turned in for repair but never removed. (© NTB)
