German Timo Werner’s chance of defeat became the topic of conversation when Chelsea beat Leeds and climbed to the top of the table in the Premier League.
CHELSEA-LEEDS 3-1
Patrick Bamford put Leeds ahead after four minutes. The former Chelsea player circled Edouard Mendy and shoved the ball into the open goal.
After nine minutes, the home team had an incredible opportunity. Timo Werner was the first to reach the corner kick, but his header was blocked by the keeper.
– What happens every day? You must score goals in that situation. It’s a bit magical that one of Europe’s top scorers can’t score in such a situation, said a slightly surprised commentator Peder Mørtvedt.
– Try to put it with the bottom, use the sole. You should only be able to put it in goal, says expert Solveig Guldbrandsen during the break.
Giroud tied for Chelsea in the 27th minute. The forward led a post from Reece James with a nice touch from close range.
BBC expert Gary Lineker praises the Frenchman for his efforts.
– I think Giroud must be the most underrated striker in football, he writes.
According to Opta, the 34-year-old is the first player to score in six straight games for Chelsea since October 2001.
Raphinha had a chance to equalize the score when Marcelo Bielsa suddenly found himself free with only the goalkeeper to beat, but the final shot hit the crossbar. The Brazilian fired after a clever corner variant.
A few minutes later, Kurt Zouma was stronger in a corner at the opposite end of the field. The midfielder rose to the top and stabbed Chelsea up front.
The fourth before the end, Werner seized another great opportunity when unpressurized he finished right over Ilian Meslier.
In extra time, Christian Pulisic punctured the game after a nice pass from Werner.
Chelsea take the lead in the Premier League before Liverpool and Tottenham play their matches on Sunday.
