Canal Digital announced this Monday that the price of TV 2 Sport Premium, which among other things gives access to the Premier League, will increase by 40 percent as of November 1. TV 2 Sumo will also be more expensive.

«TV 2 has increased its recommended price to us. TV 2 justifies the price increase with higher rights costs. Therefore, we have to increase the price of TV 2 Sport Premium accordingly, from NOK 499 to NOK 699 / month, ”states the message that Canal Digital customers have received.

The price jump corresponds to exactly 40 percent.

– Rights costs have risen significantly since the previous rights period and therefore necessary with a price increase now, TV 2 press manager Jan-Petter Dahl writes to VG via email.

It confirms that the TV channel increases its prices towards distributors by NOK 200 per month for the Premier League channels.

This is how he justifies the price increase:

– It is simply because the rights to show football cost much more. And when rights get more expensive, we have to raise the price, says Dahl.

TV 2 secured the Premier League rights for 2019-2022 in the summer of 2018. Since then, they have increased the price by NOK 50 for distributors in October 2019.

– What says that the costs of the rights have increased since the last period of rights? Was the price not set for 2019-2022 then or are there other things that come into play?

– We tried to minimize price increases and therefore we chose not to eliminate the entire increase last year, Dahl responds.

– English football is very popular in Norway and therefore there is fierce competition for the rights. This is the reason why it costs more to buy the Premier League rights for the Norwegian market than, for example, in the other Nordic countries. This is also reflected in the price that customers must pay. Rights prices vary widely between different countries. There is great interest in football and strong competition in the Norwegian market, continues the press manager of TV 2.

Dahl claims that there will also be a price increase for TV 2 Sumo subscriptions, but that the channel has not taken a definitive position on how much more expensive it will be.

– Of course, customers will be notified first and well in advance of a price increase.
